The Balanced Scorecard doesn't fail. The spreadsheet does.

Most scorecards look perfect on day one. By Tuesday, nobody owns them. The dashboard sits in a tab nobody clicks, the colors were green once, and the scorecard quietly stops being true. It didn't fail loudly. It just stopped getting used.

You've seen the stat — "67% of strategies fail." Nobody can source it. Researchers traced the whole "most strategies fail" canon back to a 1982 magazine estimate and found the evidence fragile, fragmentary, or just absent. So we stopped repeating a number we couldn't stand behind, and measured our own instead.

What actually happens after the scorecard is built

We run 17,800+ scorecards for 565 organizations. Across 52,247 strategic objectives, here's what the data shows:

  • 77.6% of strategic objectives have no owner — nobody's name is on them.
  • 76.8% of the people who do own a metric have never updated it once.
  • More than 60% are never given a real performance status — not green, not red. Blank.
  • Objectives with an owner are nearly twice as likely to be on track (46.4% vs 23.3%). An owner is the single biggest lever in the data.

The four perspectives

Money tells you what already happened. To see what happens next, you watch four things at once — and you connect them.

  • Financial — what success looks like to the people who fund you.
  • Customer — the value you create for the people you serve.
  • Internal Process — the work that delivers that value.
  • Learning & Growth — the foundation: people, culture, data, tools.

Read it bottom to top. Your people and tools improve your processes, which create customer value, which produces financial results. The arrows between them are the strategy.

The three habits that decide survival

A scorecard lives or dies on three habits, and the builder checks all three while you type: an owner on every line, a short list of measures instead of a wish list, and a review cadence you'll actually keep.

When the spreadsheet stops scaling

Excel is a fine place to draft a scorecard. A hard place to run one. The moment you cascade to a second team, or your owners stop opening the file, the spreadsheet starts telling you green when the work is red. That's the line ClearPoint was built for — auto-updated measures, owner reminders, board-ready reporting, and a strategy map that links. Same four perspectives. None of the Tuesday decay.
